HISTORY OF OPERATION READ
The concept of Operation READ (Really, Exciting, Adventure & Drama) was conceived by Margaret H. Cannon and Former Member Sharon Greene as they traveled home from a District Three Conference that had been held in Tampa, FL in April 2009.
Sharon asked Caldwell County Early College Students to co-sponsor this program with us. In the fall of 2009 we began giving to several third grade students a book a month for them to keep so they could build their own library.
Why did we choose third grade students? We had heard it expressed that “In the third grade that students needed to learn to read so that in the fourth grade they could read to learn.” We had also heard that when our state governmental officials were planning to build a new prison in our state, that they checked the reading level of third grade students to determine how many cells to place in the prison.
Since the fall of 2009, we have given more than 10,000 books to third grade students.
At the present, Friends of the Library are co-sponsoring this program with us instead of Caldwell County Early College.
In the fall of 2016, we began supplying books to a 4th grade class at Sawmills School and a 2nd grade class at Happy Valley School.
The students look forward each month to receiving the books and we have received numerous cards from the students sharing their appreciation with us as shown in the picture below.
This is truly one of the greatest service project in which we have participated since our club was organized 42 ½ years ago.
